Aside from health care and education, the improvement of housing conditions was one of the main promises of the revolution in Cuba. In 1971 the first “Microbrigadas” were formed to counteract the tremendous housing deficit in Cuba. Groups of workers were put aside from ordinary enterprises and commissioned to construct as laymen four- or five-story apartment blocs, which were further distributed according to the needs of workers and their merits within the organization. Until today several attempts were undertaken to re-activate the intriguing concept of housing built by the people.

MICROBRIGADES – VARIATIONS OF A STORY

A film by Lisa Schmidt-Colinet, Alexander Schmoeger, Florian Zeyfang

MICROBRIGADES – VARIATIONS OF A STORY follows in short fragments the turbulent and inconsistent story of the laymen-brigades  and presents two of Havanna’s large scale housing quarters: San Agustín and Alamar. Images of architecture, archival material , and interviews are combined into an experimental collage about this phenomenon of a revolutionary modernism.
