BArch 4 Studio: Ecology Sustainability Conservation

Hiromi Hosoya | Markus Vogl

The studio researches sustainable values of adaptive building systems by the use of an innovative contemporary construction material as the main structural material for the design. However, the focus in the studio will not be on craftsmanship but rather on designing adaptive systems to produce radically simple, economical, process oriented, adaptable building systems.

Prefabrication systems will be explored using different methods and technologies. Students will research innovative applications, both of current and past, and try to define their personal stance on issues such as ecology and sustainability. Based on insights from their research, we will question and attempt to reinvent the use of this contemporary material with an aim to create a habitable prototype.

Designing sustainable buildings should be a matter not only of meeting standards, but much rather of understanding each component of a building and the building itself as a component, or a subsystem, in a larger system which needs to be assessed for its overall sustainability. This can only be achieved, especially in education, by focusing on clear design principles and an understanding of processes and systems that affect a building.
