Big! Bad? Modern:

BArch 5 Studio: History | Theory | Criticism

Angelika Schnell | Lisa Schmidt-Colinet

In the HTC studio, students analysed and interpreted the four Viennese “agents”, the AKH, the ORF, the WU and the Alterlaa housing estate in their historical and theoretical context. We asked whether they are „agents“ of Modernism or rather of the critique of Modernism? This investigation aims at acquiring the ability to distinguish between a historical and a theoretical mode of research, as well as their mutual relations. Each of the four buildings has a history of its ideas and an actual building history. Each should be understood within of itself and in their reciprocal effects. The historical research focuses on a close reading of the material and the ideological context, during which the building was constructed – these results are presented in the format of short films and podcast. The following theoretical research includes contemporary standpoints, argued by the students, both in a scientific and ideological way. Thereby the reading of Modernism and especially late Modernism today has to acknowledge its own criticism. This second research phase lead students to write an essay based on a selected topic or relevant question.
