This years BA6 studio project of the Roland Rainer chair will work on Vienna’s Arrival City Favoriten. After focusing on the relation between urban development and mobility during the winter term, this semester we will extend the notion of mobility into the social-economic realm.
According to Doug Saunder’s Arrival Cities in Sao Paulo, Istanbul or Shenzhen are where “the next great economic and cultural boom will be born, or where the next explosion of violence will occur.” Yet the phenomenon of people migrating to cities is also to be found in Rotterdam, Brussels - and Vienna. Interpreting the slogan ‘think global - act social’ we will focus on the 10th District as an entry port and first step for many new urbanites from South-Eastern Europe and beyond. We will research various factors responsible for the success or failure of an arrival city. This includes the access to housing, education and entrepreneurship.

Starting from the precise analysis and mapping of a number of given sites in Favoriten, we will work towards specific architectural interventions that not only improve the actual condition of the people living there, but also activate their social and economic potential.

We will make practical use of the theoretical support offered by Edgar Morin on the concept of Reliance, Scott Lasch on the concept of Reflexivity and Michel de Certeau on The Art of Trickery. The theoretical discourse will be accompanied by the analysis of best practice examples. These projects intervene spatially and programmatically in comparable arrival cities all over the world and address (social) mobility in the widest sense of the word.

Further on, the studio features (bi)weekly lectures whose content and didactics are strongly related to the process of the studio work. Different aspects of analyzing and designing arrival cities will be addressed, such as an introduction to the phenomena of arrival cities in general, an introduction to the specific conditions in Favoriten, a presentation of different notation techniques, reference projects and related projects in the arrival cities of Brussels and Rotterdam.

The design studio will have a strong interactive character, including presentations from external experts and students, structured fieldwork, compact analysis and design exercises. A parallel studio of the Artez Academy of Architecture will work on the Arrival City, Rotterdam Zuid. The studio includes a joint excursion and workshop, with both schools, to Arrival Cities in Rotterdam and Brussels.
Last but not least, the studio aims to enlarge the conception of architectural design as an integral instrument for intervening spatially, but also economically, ecologically and socially in the city.
