Meanwhile

The title “Meanwhile” refers to the time period between the moment when a formerly productive, industrial area is abandoned and the beginning of its redevelopment. The objective of the project is to challenge this in-between time through a design proposal. I argue that the phase of abandonment has to be considered equally important compared to their productive past and their hoped future.

In my project I demonstrate the existence of a liveliness in such sites, even before they are re-activated through a new master plan. By drawing, reading, recognizing and accepting the status quo the signs of constantly ongoing transformations can be identified. These found signs, with their qualities and strange aesthetics, are taken as a trigger for new design ideas.

The project operates in a specific location in Budapest, in the 9th district at the former hall of a whole sale market. Four interventions are made: each of them unfolds from their context; none of them are connected to one another, and the different materialities enhance each site’s specific characteristics.
