Open Close Ground!

Urban Renewal of Postindustrial Lowland of the City of Brno

The existing image of the project area is CLOSE GROUND. The new image created by the project is OPEN CLOSE GROUND. The project´s aim is to change the image of the area by creating interventions and new connections on the level of public space and infrastructure.
The project site is located in the city of BRNO that is the second largest city of the Czech Republic. The city is located in the southeastern part of the country at the confluence of two rivers. The project area is a lowland among the CITY CENTRE, the RAILWAYS and the RIVERS. The area is characterized by unused, or only partly used BROWNFIELDS. Barriers like fences, walls and abandoned railways are dominating this zone. In such a place one can feel lost and disorientated and it can become a labyrinth of corridors full dead ends.

Open Close Ground!

Janica Sipulova

The aim of the project is to comprehend the area as a whole and to „OPEN CLOSE GROUND!“ It creates a new image for the largely uninhabited and unknown area that cuts Brno into two halves by a series of interventions. The interventions create new connections and important points that reveal and adapt to the layered history of the site; make the site accessible and allow for a future densification; introduce and enhance the ecological and cultural functions of the area engaging both sides of the city; transform a mono-functional neglected area into a multifunctional public space providing opportunities for pedestrians, cyclists, commercial activities. The newly accessible wide fields communicate between the old and the new users of the area and effects the areas nearby.
